The LMC will host a ‘Top Tips for your GP Practice Premises’ webinar with BW Healthcare Surveyors early next year.

The webinar is open to all Practice Managers and GPs and will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding the notional rent review process and how to challenge the proposal from the NHS.
  • Considerations for both GP practices and landlords when putting a lease in place.
  • How to maximise the rental income and capital value of your GP practice.
  • Market update, including service charge disputes with NHS Property Services, pharmacy rent reviews and transferring your GMS contract to another entity.
  • How to claim your ‘Free premises health check’
  • Q&A session.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, January 15, from 1-2pm, via Microsoft Teams. It will have plenty of ‘takeaways’ and ‘time saving tips’ to enable you to get on top of any premises related issues you might be having.

Will Ellis will deliver the webinar – he has helped thousands of GP practices and healthcare providers with all their property needs from rent reviews to lease renewals, market valuations to sale and leasebacks.

Five years into one of the biggest transfers of core funding that GP practices have seen, and there remains a level of disconnect between practices, and the funding entitlements from their networks.

This effective pooling of significant NHS funding now represents a huge part of overall practice income, but many practices continue to receive very little information or funding from their network, which on top of leaving a funding gap, can also expose practices to adverse tax issues.

In this online session, hosted by Kernow LMC and delivered by local specialist medical accountants Albert Goodman – on Wednesday, 12 February, from 1-2pm – we will cover network finances and what you need to know as a practice, to ensure that you are receiving what you are entitled to, the tax implications of inaction, and the importance of standing up for your own practice’s position within your network.

We will also discuss the importance of your accountant being on your side to liaise with the network, the fundamental problems that can arise from holding back significant income, and the importance of a clear and comprehensive set of network accounts delivered in a timely manner.

The Autumn 2024 budget immediately increased staff costs for GP practices by way of the increased employer’s National Insurance contributions, with practices having no access to the reliefs for this afforded to many other businesses.

As a result, practices have been left with real concerns as to what their staffing costs and structures may look like, in what is already a challenging time for workloads.

The response has been one of consternation but, with no clarity at the time of writing as to what, if any, funding may be given to cover some of this increase, practices need to understand how they will be affected, and what they can do in practice.

This online session, hosted by Kernow LMC and delivered by local specialist medical accountants Albert Goodman – on Wednesday, 5 February, from 1-2pm – will cover the implications of the increase for practices, and key considerations in light of this increase to their cost base.

Covering the detail of the increases, the importance of staff budgets and control over costs, and the various strategies that are open to practices on staffing and partner earnings, this session will give practices the tools they need to balance the need to effectively staff their practice, to maintaining partner earnings.

Following on from the General Practitioners’ Committee roadshow for Cornish general practice on 11 JulyKernow LMC will host an online meeting for local GP surgeries to discuss what measures they would be comfortable taking collectively in protest at the 2024/25 GP Contract imposition and years of under-funding and under-resourcing prior to potential industrial action in the autumn.

We will be seeking local views on the potential action outlined in the British Medical Association’s GP Practice Survival Toolkit, along with other ideas from Cornish general practice on how to take a stand.

The virtual meeting will take place on Tuesday, 23 July, from 7-8pm via Microsoft Teams and is open for GPs, GP registrars and Practice Managers. Please try to ensure that your surgery is represented.

As ever we are always keen to offer as much as we can in the Practice Staff Training programme. This year has been a tricky one to organise with last minute changes from f2f to online courses. We are very keen to keep our Practice Staff Training Programme available to you all - we have re-scheduled all the workshops with dates to be held later in the year. Thank you for being very patient on waiting for the new dates.

With the present situation in mind, the room that we use has now been set up to take account for the present social distancing rules. We can accommodate up to, and including, 12 delegates safely. However, there will be no refreshment or lunch facilities provided, so we are asking all delegates to bring their own.

Cost is £40 for a half day course and £60 for a full day course. If you need any further details of the courses email Nicky.

The LMC is pleased to announce more details of our Art of Brilliance session with Martin Burder. In these trying times, we felt it would be good to have a workshop to bring a bit of cheer to everybody. The workshop will be online and is aimed not only at the Practice Managers, but all practice members.
It will last 60 to 90 minutes and will take place in the morning from10.30am.
Costings – individual delegates: £30 per head; Practice rate of £100 – 10 people maximum. If you wish to include more practice members under the practice rate you can – please contact me for a price.
