SUMMARY:Men's Health: Top Tips on PSA Testing
DESCRIPTION:Men's Health:Top Tips on PSA Testing - 13th July 2021 - 12.30pm to 1.30pm \nTop tips on PSA testing \nA huge topic in itself.  First establish the man’s main concern. The PSA test should certainly not be done without adequate counselling. A quick summary of the facts may be as follows: large trials have shown that use of the PSA test results in fewer men dying of prostate cancer\, but not fewer deaths overall. Its use can result in detection of prostate cancer cases that may never have caused any problems\, with investigations and treatments that have risks of side effects (overdetection\, overtreatment)\, though this is improving. \nIt can be helpful to direct men to an information leaflet from the Prostate Cancer Risk Management \nThe Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme provides good advice to professionals and patients \n“The PSA  Test is available free to any well man over 50 who requests it” \nPlus: \nYounger men with high risk at the GP’s clinical judgement \nOther factors influencing a high PSA \n10 years’ life expectancy important to consider \nSensitivity and specificity\, currently being reviewed by DOH regarding national screening programme

SUMMARY:Men's Health: Cancer and the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Men's Health: Cancer and the Heart - 7th July 2021 - 12.30pm to 1.30pm \nCancer and the heart \nImprovements in cancer treatment and earlier diagnosis have contributed to increased survival. Unfortunately\, many cancer treatments carry an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The CVD risk is of particular consideration in an ageing population of cancer survivors who may have co-morbidities which also exacerbate this risk\, and in adult survivors of childhood cancer treatment who may present with CVD symptoms at a relatively young age. Heart disease following cancer treatment may be the result of direct CV damage\, caused by the treatment or may be due to the development of cancer treatment-related CV risk factors. \nWorking with other professionals when necessary\, GPs\, community pharmacists and nurses are in a good position to follow-up people affected by cancer to ensure that CV risks are monitored\, preventative action is taken\, CVD is diagnosed and appropriate treatments are initiated.

SUMMARY:Men's Health: Update on Prostate Cancer
DESCRIPTION:Men's Health: Update on Prostate Cancer - 17th June 2021 - 12.30pm to 1.30pm \nProstate cancer now most commonly diagnosed cancer in England \nThere were 49\,029 diagnoses of prostate cancer in 2018\, meaning prostate cancer overtakes breast cancer as the most common cancer in England. \nToo many men are diagnosed late \n(approx 20% stage 4\, no longer prostate confined\, 17% at latest NPCA report) \nStage 1 The tumour is contained in the prostate. The tumour is too small to be felt on DRE or to be seen on a scan. \nStage 2 The tumour is still contained in the prostate\, but can be felt on DRE \nStage 3 The tumour has started to break through the outer capsule of the prostate and may be in the seminal vesicles. \nStage 4 The tumour has spread outside the prostate. It may have spread to areas such as the bladder or rectum. Or it may have spread further\, for example to the bones. \nOne-year net survival for prostate cancer is highest for patients diagnosed at Stage 1\, Stage 2\, and lowest for those diagnosed at Stage 4\, 100% of patients diagnosed at Stage 1 & Stage 2 survived their disease for at least one year\, compared to 88% of patients diagnosed at Stage 4. \nFive-year net survival decreases from Stage 3 (96%) to Stage 4 (49%)\, a difference of 47 percentage points. \nThe presentation will focus on early diagnosis\, advances in treatment and dealing with complications at follow up.

SUMMARY:6 week yoga course
DESCRIPTION:It is always important for us to take the time to look after ourselves physically and mentally\, but it is even more paramount at times like these. Yoga is a simple practice where we focus on physical and mental stillness to reduce stress and increase flexibility and should help you unwind. Join us and allow our experienced Yoga teacher\, Roessa Marks to guide you through a yoga class designed specifically with GPs in mind. There will be options to suit both absolute beginners and those who have been practicing longer. The class will start with a brief introduction to yoga with an emphasis on benefits to health and wellbeing. Message from Roessa: “I understand the pace we live our lives and how we often crave a sense of tranquillity\, silence and stillness that we only seem to enjoy when on holiday\, on a beach or on top of a mountain. When one has that feeling of being overwhelmed and exhausted; when you simply can't see the wood for the trees - I have discovered that yoga can bring back a stillness and peace\, allowing clarity and positivity to re-emerge.” The class with be a multi-level 60 minute class - all levels are welcome! Requirements and equipment If you have a mat that is perfect for the class\, if not\, a towel that's large enough for you to lie down on is a good alternative. If you have any injuries or pregnancies please take these into account when you practice. By taking part in the class you are acknowledging that all exercise involves a risk of personal injury\, including a small risk of serious injury or death\, and agree to take responsibility for your health and well-being in relation to our yoga classes.
