SUMMARY:The Future of Primary Care - webinar
DESCRIPTION:Former Chair of the Somerset CCG and Dr Mohit Venkataram discuss the 'John Lewis' Model at The Future of Primary Care Webinar on 7 December 2022.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAre you a health professional working in primary care in the NHS? Are you interested in knowing what primary care health leaders have to say about the future of primary care? \nOn 7 December 2022 at 7pm via Zoom join Dr Edward Ford\, GP at Minehead Medical Centre in Somerset when he talks about the new 'John Lewis' model of care with Dr Mohit Venkataram\, Executive Lead for Primary Care at East London NHS Foundation Trust. \nThe discussion will address: \n\nThe new 'John Lewis' model in response to increasing numbers of GPs leaving over time\nHow to offer GPs and other health staff a say in how a practice is run\nHow to protect the ongoing stability and sustainability of a practice\nHow to make a GP surgery a more attractive place for staff to work and develop their careers.\n\nAbout Minehead Medical Centre\nMinehead Medical Centre\, has become the first individual GP surgery in the country to operate as a 'John Lewis' style employee-owned trust (EOT). The practice\, which has a patient population of 13\,000 and around 50 staff\, adopted the new model in response to increasing numbers of its GPs leaving over time. \nAbout the 'John Lewis' Model\nUnder the John Lewis model\, every employee owns a non-tradeable share in the company at no extra cost to them. This share is held on their behalf by trustees of the organisation\, who are chosen by the practice staff. According to this model\, each employee has much more involvement when discussing how the practice is run and has more power when making decisions\, as they are all effectively co-owners. \nAbout Dr Edward Ford\nDr Edward Ford is a GP\, former Chair of the Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group and leader of the development of the employee-owned trust at Minehead Medical Centre. He said: "This model gives us the best of both worlds\, where you are still salaried but you have control of your own destiny\, and that applies to all staff who can take on leadership roles within the surgery." \nFor more information on the story click here. \nWebinar Logistics\nRegister below and you will immediately receive your registration confirmation email\, containing your unique Zoom link to join the session on the day. \nThroughout the session\, you will have the chance to interact with Mohit and Dr Edward via the live Q&A function and chat. \nWe strongly encourage you to submit questions ahead of time to make sure your question will be answered at the session. \nThe webinar will last for one hour\, from 7pm. \nRegister here: Webinar Registration - Zoom

SUMMARY:Live Longer Better with Professor Sir Muir Gray
DESCRIPTION:Live Longer Better \nThe aim of the project is to reduce disability\, dementia and frailty\, by enabling older people to become more active\, not only physically but also mentally. The Living Longer Better programme aims to increase healthy life expectancy\, and for every year of healthy life expectancy the need for health and social care is reduced by £45 Million per million population\, estimated using the work of Outcomes Based Healthcare \, based at the Kings Fund \, and the aim is an extra five years of healthy life expectancy. \nEven more urgent of course are the effects of the Covid pandemic and lockdown which have been very well described in research documents from Age UK and the Centre for Ageing Better. There will be a spike in the need for health and social care this year as a result not of population ageing but of the effects of lockdown.  Our Living Longer Better programme is based on the evidence that ageing by itself is not a cause of major problems until the nineties. The problem is due to: \n\nloss of fitness\nDisease\, complicated by  accelerated by loss of fitness\, and\nNegative thinking\n\nThe new Sport England strategy focuses on population ageing as one of its priorities and our mission is to change the way people think about living longer so that they increase activity\, physical and mental\, because we know there is NICE guidance that both dementia and frailty can be delayed or prevented.   We are working with the Optimal Ageing Programme in Oxford led by Sir Muir Gray\, which provides us with our evidence base and support in our mission of delivering the Living Longer Better systems objectives which are listed below \n\nTo prevent and mitigate isolation\nTo increase physical ability and fitness and increase healthspan\npromote knowledge and understanding about living longer better among older people and the wider population to counteract the detrimental effects of ageism\nTo create an environment in which people can fulfil their potential\nTo enable activation of older people strengthening of purpose\nTo support carers better\nTo minimise and mitigate the effects of deprivation\nTo reduce the risk of and delay or prevent  dementia\nTo prevent and minimise the effects of disease and multimorbidity\nTo enable dying as well as living well\n\nOur other mission is to change the culture from an old fashioned view of ‘care’ meaning doing things for older people to one which is much closer to rehabilitation\, namely enabling people to close the gap between potential and performance.  Obviously we are keen to do this working with key partners – Age UK\, social care and the NHS and I am writing to you to ask your advice about linking with the NHS.

SUMMARY:Severe asthma: recognising and referring patients in the biologic treatment era (Presented by Royal Devon and Exeter)
DESCRIPTION:The South West AHSN is delighted to be hosting multiple educational webinars on severe asthma developed by the South West Severe Asthma Network\, supported by West of England and South West AHSNs. \nIn this webinar we will cover diagnosing asthma\, the impact of uncontrolled asthma\, how to identify patients with uncontrolled asthma and why and where to refer. \nPeople living with severe asthma face many challenges; they may have a lowered quality of life\, have an increased risk of mortality and are at a greater risk of avoidable comorbidities. Their symptoms may also go undiagnosed for many years. Diagnosis and treatment can transform patient lives by reducing asthma attacks\, asthma-related hospital admissions and long-term side-effects of other treatments. \nThis webinar will be repeated several times throughout September\, and will be delivered by partners across the South West region. This particular webinar will be presented by Plymouth University Trust. To sign up\, please click the link below which will take you to the South West AHSN website where you can register. \nYou will need to select the date of the webinar that you would like to attend. Please note\, all webinars present the same information and you do not need to attend more than one.
